Historical Information
Today, we call our area the "Sandhills" and stay pretty warm year 'round.
But, around 9,000 B.C., the first inhabitants bundled up! It was cold here! Throughout
the years and with climate changes, things have changed. Now, we have a little
winter, but the rest of the year is a very pleasant temperature.
Since 9,000
B.C., we've welcomed people from around the globe.
In the 1700s, pioneers from
Scotland came and established communities with thriving plantations. Owners
utilized slaves who worked the fields, built the roads and contributed to the
overall quality of life. They learned how to utilize nature's bounty to cure
sores, colds and fevers.
Longleaf pine trees were an important part of our
economy, producing gum products and timber. Tar, rosin and turpentine were
used by the naval industries domestically and abroad. There was so much rosin
here that if you walked through the woods, you would get pine rosin on your
feet - thus sparking the term, "Tar
Heels."
In the early 1900s, the Rockefeller family purchased land from
plantation owners which later became parts of Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force
Base. Land was used for recreation - so it's only natural that today, a portion
of the property is maintained for others to enjoy.
