The Annual Employee Appreciation Luncheon - Thurday, Dec. 10, 2009
The Town honored it's employees with an appreciation luncheon held in the Recreation Center. During the Luncheon, those employees who had 5 years of service with the Town were recognized (Jeff Barnes, Andy Thomas and Lee Sudia) as well as those with 10 years service (KC Coleman, Cliff Francisco, Paul Hoover, Ken Metcalf, Jim Schultz.) The Town is proud of the employees and the hard work they provide the residents. The Town recognizes that it would not be able to function if it were not for the efforts of the men and women who make up the various departments; the people who day in and day out perform their jobs to the best of their abilities. Spring Lake is blessed with a good group of people - they truly are Spring Lake's finest.
The Spring Lake Christmas Tree -
The REAL story
In 2001, the United States experienced the most horrific terrorist attack in the history of our great nation. This led the President to make the hard decision to send the greatest fighting force in the world to war. Since then, our brave men and women have been deployed around the world fighting the war on terror. They have done so in order to keep us safe, to fight for freedom for all people and to liberate those who cannot defend themselves. They have done so in a proud and commendable manner. Many have given the ultimate sacrifice and for that, we as a nation are forever grateful.
The troops who are far away serving their country leave behind families - be it mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands or children. They are our neighbors, our friends and whether we know them by name or not, they are close to our hearts and never far from our minds.
War does not take a vacation; it does not stop because it is Christmas time. These valiant souls find themselves separated from those they most long to be with this time of year; the time of year when we are fortunate enough to spend time with those we hold most dear to us.
Mayor Clark, with her never ending dedication to our military neighbors, took this to heart. She wanted Spring Lake to be an inspiration for those families here and for our Town to show the community and everyone who came through how much Spring Lake truly cares about our military, both here and abroad. She decided to start with the Town’s Tree Lighting Ceremony. Instead of adorning the Tree with colorful lights and glass ornaments, the Town would wrap the tree in yellow lights and decorate it with yellow ribbons. The yellow ribbons and lights have been symbolic with a family member returning home to the ones they loved. Spring Lake has many men and women it loves who are deployed. Mayor Clark decided the tree would be decorated with yellow lights and ribbons until the last man and woman came home from war.
Once the tree is lit by representatives from Ft. Bragg, Pope Air Force Base and the Mayor at the ceremony each year, the yellow lights shine bright as a beacon from the Town throughout the Christmas season. They are a reminder of the love the Town has for those who bravely serve and are not here to share the season with us. May the lights shine brightly with all our hope that the ones we love will return safe and soon.
