TEMPORARY CLOSING OF MENDOZA PARK

SPRING LAKE, NC – (February 1, 2012) –  On Monday, January 30, 2012, the Spring Lake Board of Aldermen voted to close Mendoza Park until further notice due to public safety concerns while the park undergoes repairs and improvements.

Mendoza Park, located at 1770 Little River Road just off Highway 87 South, is the Town’s largest park facility. The Town received funds through the North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) to make significant improvements and repairs to the 32 year old park.  The project calls for $730,000 worth of improvements, half being grant funds and the other half being Town matched funds.

“Closing Mendoza Park for the foreseeable future is a public safety measure,” states Mayor Chris Rey. “This will allow the contractor to have full access to the park and will speed up the process.  Mendoza will be open in time for baseball and softball season.  We are especially excited to have it open for the 11th Annual Spring Fling Festival on May 12th.”

The Mendoza Park project is expected to be completed by late spring, with the heaviest construction taking place now through mid-March.  Improvements slated to take place are:

  • New playground equipment
  • Re-orientation of fields A and C to allow for better baseball/softball, football and soccer usages
  • New dug-outs for fields A & B
  • A new concession stand and restroom facility
  • A quarter mile, paved walking track
  • New sports lighting for field A
  • A paved parking lot
  • New benches, water fountains and trash containers
  • Additional bleachers for Field C

Ken Metcalf, Recreation and Parks director added, “The Recreation Advisory Committee, in conjunction with the Recreation staff and many public input meetings, developed a Master Plan which included all of the improvements taking place at Mendoza Park.  It is through these efforts that the PARTF was secured and we are eager to see the end result.”

The Town has information on the Mendoza Park renovations on its website to include photos of the ongoing renovations.  These can be found on the Recreation and Parks pages. If you have questions or comments about this project or any Recreation activity, the number to the Recreation Department is (910) 436-0011.  The Office of the Mayor can be contacted at (910) 436-0241.

SPRING LAKE POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCES

NEW SERVICES

The Spring Lake Police Department formally announces the addition of two new services available to the community.  These services are part of an ongoing effort to promote better communication with residents as well as to ensure peace of mind, cooperation with law enforcement and harmony within and around the Town.

The first is MapNimbus. Those familiar with MapNimbus know it is a powerful and robust tool that can be used 24 hours a day from any computer.  Those not familiar with it will quickly come to realize how simple it is to navigate yet how informative it can be.  MapNimbus boasts a familiar, intuitive, Google Maps interface that is easy-to-use. MapNimbus allows a user to search by address or agency to view crimes in their area. A user can narrow the scope of their search by using a pre-defined buffer, which in case of Spring Lake, is defaulted to the Town. The crimes can be narrowed down even further by specifying a specific date range one wishes to view. To view information about a crime, all one has to do is to click the icon and a map tip will display relevant information about the crime. Online crime mapping is made easier with MapNimbus. MapNimbus also allows a user to view sex offender data for their area. This allows one to stay informed of any registered sex offenders residing near their home, work, daycare, school, parks, public library, etc. A user can search for sex offenders near an address. They can also click on the sex offender icon and view information about the offender on the mapping interface. MapNimbus also allows one to click a link and visit the state's sex offender site directly for more detailed information. It also offers reports and statistics and allows a user to sign up for e-mail notifications.  It is a robust program, with no charge, allowing anyone to stay informed of information which can potentially offer comfort and peace knowing what is going on in their community. The Spring Lake Police Department has added this link and information to their webpage on the Town’s website.  It is currently up and running ready for anyone who wishes to start using it.

The second service is a toll free tip line where any one with information pertaining to a crime or incident that has occurred, within the Town of Spring Lake, can call, free of charge, and leave the details or any information they feel is relevant.  All callers will remain anonymous. All information provided will be processed and valid leads will be followed-up on by the appropriate member(s) of the Spring Lake Police Department. This number is 1-855-770-TIPS (1-855-770-8477.)  It should be noted that this is NOT a number to call if it is an emergency or if you are in immediate danger.  If it is an emergency, you need immediate assistance or you are in immediate danger, call 911.

“When I became Chief I made a commitment to the community,” says Chief McDuffie. “This meant providing ways to get information to the residents of Spring Lake as well as ways for the community to get information to us.  With MapNimbus, anyone can view incidents that have occurred in Spring Lake.  In fact, they can view information across the state.  With our tip line, individuals can call and leave information pertaining to crimes, suspects or other matters that we may need to investigate.  These are just two more ways we are strengthening our role as public safety leaders in Spring Lake. We hope that everyone takes advantage of MapNimbus and uses the tip line when they need to.”

To learn more about MapNimbus, the tip line (I-855-770-TIPS), Chief McDuffie and the Spring Lake Police Department, visit the Police Page on this website or call the Spring Lake Police Department at (910) 436-0350.

COUNTY ENCOURAGES CITIZENS TO SIGN UP FOR NEW EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SERVICE

Cumberland County Emergency Services has contracted with Emergency Communications Network to license its CodeRED high-speed notification service. The CodeRED system provides county officials the ability to quickly deliver weather warnings and other urgent messages to targeted areas or to the entire county.

Emergency Services Director Kenny Currie cautioned that such systems are only as good as the telephone number database supporting them.

"If your phone number is not in the database, you will not be called," Currie said. The system will give individuals and businesses the ability to add their own phone numbers directly into the system's database.

“No one should automatically assume his or her phone number is included,” Currie said, urging all individuals and businesses to log onto the County’s website, www.co.cumberland.nc.us, and follow the link to the "CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment" page.

Residents are able to supply as many phone numbers for one address as they choose; however, they cannot   supply numerous addresses for one phone number.  Citizens can also supply email addresses and choose to receive text messages. At the bottom of the link, they will notice the Weather Warning box.  This is where they choose whether or not they wish to receive the weather warnings, and if so, which warnings they want to receive (flash flood, tornado, and/or severe weather).

Citizens without Internet access may call the Emergency Management Office at 910-678-7641 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to supply their information over the phone. Required information includes first and last name, street address (physical address, no P.O. boxes), city, state, zip code, and primary phone number.

All businesses should register, as well as all individuals who have unlisted phone numbers, who have changed their phone number or address within the past year, and those who use a cellular phone or VoIP phone as their primary number.

“CodeRED allows geographically based delivery, which means street addresses are required to ensure emergency notification calls are received by the proper individuals in a given situation. The system works for cell phones too, but we need to have an associated street address to provide relevant messages," Currie said.

“CodeRED gives those who want to be included an easy and secure method for inputting information. The data collected will only be used for emergency notification purposes,” Currie said. Questions should be directed to the Emergency Management Office at 910-678-7641.
