Kenneth (Ken) Metcalf began working as the Director of Recreation and Parks in August of 1999. Prior to his hiring in Spring Lake, he was the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Aberdeen for eight years. Ken began his career by serving as a volunteer Youth Basketball and Baseball League Coordinator at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (Goldsboro, NC) during his military service from 1984-88. In March of 1988 he was hired as an Area Athletic Coordinator for Moore County Parks and Recreation, a position he held until August 1990. In April 1991 Ken was hired as the Athletic Coordinator for the Town of Aberdeen and was promoted to Director in December of that year. While in Aberdeen he oversaw an extensive rebuilding of the town’s athletic programs, special events and facilities. In July of 1999 Aberdeen was awarded their first Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant for Colonial Heights Park and a National Trails Grant for Aberdeen Lake Park.
Since beginning his position in Spring Lake the department has produced a growth of over 400% in youth athletics, he is Co-Chair of the Town’s Annual Spring Fling Festival (which began in 2002), and was the Director during the construction and opening of the Town’s 17,250 sq. ft. Multi-purpose Center which opened in October of 2006. During his time the Town has also improved facilities at local neighborhood parks to include new playground equipment, walking trails and basketball courts. In July of 2011 the Town of Spring Lake opened a new neighborhood park in the Woodland West neighborhood. In October of 2011 the Town will begin improvements to Mendoza Park from local funding and a match from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant. Ken and his family proudly reside within the Town of Spring Lake.
